Calne Fact File
Calne is situated on the River Marden and the Wilts & Berks Canal
During the Anglo Saxon period, Calne was the site of a two-storey building with a hall on the first floor. It was here that the Archbishop of Canterbury, St Dunstan met the Witenagemot in order to justify Church reforms
In the eightennth century Calne had an established woollen broadcloth industry. The clothiers' houses still remain as do a number of the original clth mills along the river. In the fifteenth century, the parish church of St Mary's was built by donations from rich clothiers and wool merchants
