The cathedral city of Salisbury is the only city in the county of Wiltshire
The buiding of Salisbury Cathedral began in 1220, though there were older versions of a cathedral in 'New Sarum' since the late eleventh century. The city was called 'New Sarum' to distinguish from the older settlement to the north - 'Old Sarum'
The spire of the cathedral was built at a later date and stands 123 metres, making it the tallest spire in the country
