The cathedral city of Salisbury is the only city in the county of Wiltshire
The buiding of Salisbury Cathedral began in 1220, though there were older versions of a cathedral in 'New Sarum' since the late eleventh century. The city was called 'New Sarum' to distinguish from the older settlement to the north - 'Old Sarum'
The spire of the cathedral was built at a later date and stands 123 metres, making it the tallest spire in the country
Five gates were built into the city walls. The composer Handel wrote several works whilst staying in a room over St Ann's Gate
